What you may not know as an audience member is that the gentle soul conducting the Chorale is a real treasure and we are not the only ones to think so. On October 3, 1990, when East and West Germany celebrated their reunification, the official festivities began with an ecumenical service in the Marienkirche in East Berlin. Attendance was by invitation only; only heads of state and politicians from around the world were invited. It was Christian Grube’s choir that was invited to perform!
In 1989, Arvo Pärt composed his Magnificat for Christian Grube and his boys’ choir. This year the Estonian composer, Pärt Uusberg, arranged the Estonian sacred folksong Ma tulen, dedicating it to Christian and the Santa Cruz Chorale. Both of these pieces will be performed in this year’s Christmas concert.
Like Christian, this year’s Christmas concert is filled with treasures. Our program opens with the radiant Adventi ének by Zoltán Kodály and continues with pieces from Praetorius to Tavener. Do you enjoy In Dulci Jubilo? Hear two completely different arrangements by Leonhard Paminger. Is his work unfamiliar to you? You’re in for a treat. Are you someone whose Christmas isn’t complete without Johann Sebastian Bach? He’s there too with his Vom Himmel hoch. Four Spanish pieces are nestled between Buxtehude’s Magnificat and Scarlatti’s Exultate Deo.
We’re also fortunate to have The Monterey Bay Sinfonietta accompany us again this year.
Come and hear these glorious pieces. Bring a friend. You won’t be disappointed!
By popular demand, we’ve made the program notes, written by our own Karen Gordon, available on the Christmas with the Chorale concert page. The notes provide a fascinating reading of the music you will get to hear at the concert. Enjoy!
