June 25th and 26th: Santa Cruz Chorale sings Stravinsky and Renaissance Motets

We invite you to join the Santa Cruz Chorale in a summertime musical adventure:

Works from the 16th century surround and inform the main work of our next performance, Igor Stravinsky’s Mass for mixed chorus and double wind quintet, composed in 1948. It is one of Stravinsky’s very few compositions that was not commissioned; he wrote it not from need, but because the idea was close to his heart.  As you listen to the Stravinsky and the other pieces in this performance, you will perhaps discover how older music influences later compositions. While the Mass is decidedly “modern,” its debt to tradition can be heard not only in Gregorian reminiscences, but in the wind instrument accompaniment that reminds one of early Renaissance compositions.

Another part of the musical adventure will be in following the motifs found in the compositions using double and triple choirs. These pieces use the counterpoint of many voices, which show to such advantage in the acoustical space of Holy Cross Church.
