Today, the pace of change is dizzying. In the tumult of the 21st century, do you sometimes want to shout, “Whoa, can we slow down for a moment?”
The Santa Cruz Chorale is here to help, with the most treasured of all traditions: Holiday Carols. Join us for Christmas with the Chorale and be carried to a realm of peace and joy, as we celebrate the holidays with timeless songs from around the world.
We love to sing carols for you! And we sing them in their original languages, to transport you to other lands and other times. This year, we bring back an audience favorite, the stunning The Hopeful Mother of God in Ukrainian. We introduce Swedish and Danish carols and an Icelandic hymn whose text dates to the 13th century. (I imagine deep snowdrifts, frozen waterfalls, people in woolen cloaks huddled around a glowing hearth).
We bring back our much-loved Spanish carols, accompanied by Latin rhythm instruments. My personal favorite is the lively 16th century Riu Riu Chiu, written by the famous composer, Anonymous. The singers entreat God to protect them from the wolf on the riverbank! Look for the basses (a.k.a. The Back Row Boys) who are both playing and singing. Your toes will be tapping, for sure!
We haven’t forgotten how to sing in English. The Holly and the Ivy dates from medieval England but never grows old. And we are delighted to bring you a splendid tune from Australia. It’s the story of The Three Drovers, riding across the plain, who see a brilliant star.
There’s more, but we want to surprise you! This is our tradition and our gift to you in a busy world: bringing you timeless music every holiday season.
I invite you to join us for Christmas with the Chorale.
