December Concert Broadcast Interview

Artistic Director Christian Grube talks about our upcoming concert “Christmas with the Chorale” in a broadcast interview on KUSP!

In an interview with Kirby Scudder of the Santa Cruz Institute of Contemporary Art, director Christian Grube gave some interesting insights into the Santa Cruz Chorale:

“… it happens to be that spiritual music is the best music for our taste.  This choir has a long tradition of singing Monteverdi, the Italian composer.  And we have also extended beyond just Monteverdi to other people of that time as well as many Anglican composers from Byrd and Orlando Gibbons as well as others.  We do not shy away from modern music as well such as Eric Whitacre, one of the best known composers today. …  It’s a group of between 30 and 40 people and what makes me happy is that the members are fairly constant. It is not a steady change that you have with students. Students who advance to a high level usually move on when they are done. These singers mostly stay here and that is an advantage.”
